Let's Talk: Blogger/Social Media Pet Peeves

I love being a blogger, and I love reading blogs... it is my spare time, all of it, consumed with my blog. But there is things about it that annoys me, and I am sure I am not alone here! So I thought we could share our top annoyances, so here is mine....

1. Twitter Auto DMs
The bain of every twitter user at the moment, and it seems to be way more common now too, no one wants an automated message, no one needs one! So if you have one and think it's the right thing to do - please PLEASE stop, you are not making friends this way, and no - it won't make people follow you. It's a sure way to loose followers!

2. The Follow & Unfollow Method
This is so bad on Instagram especially. It drives me flipping bonkers, 10 people will follow you, 20 will unfollow on a daily basis, it is an uphill struggle. What makes this all worse is there is people who love this method, because unfortunately... it works.

3. Buying Followers
This one is top of the list on how to piss me off. People who pay money for followers, then expect brands to send them things based on this. They give influencers a bad name. Easiest way to spot them on instagram is to see their likes per picture. If someone has been active for a while, their likes per picture should be between 5-10% of their followers. (I have 2700 followers on IG currently, and get around 190-280 likes per picture). I have a "blogger" local to me, who bought 25K of followers, she is lucky to get 100 likes per photo - but she demands brand collaborations, drives me bonkers!

4. Being Shady
Ohhh you just thought to write about something totally not beauty related on your beauty blog, put in a follow link and not declare? Not cool! We have all seen them, and it is just bad practice - not to mention you could get into a lot of trouble!

5. Just Expecting Things
We all know one person on twitter that seems to believe they have a right to openly ask any and every brand, related or not to their blog - to be sent something. I am all for contacting brands if you have a good idea for a post, or want to be considered etc, but have some tact about it, don't use twitter begging for things - it isn't pretty.

6. "Great Post" *Twitter, BL, Blog, IG, Facebook Link*
I love it when people share their link at the end of a comment, it lets me interact better, visit their blog, and keep an eye on who is commenting. But I really hate it when people are clearly just copying and pasting the same comment onto everyone's blog, usually followed with every link they have - most of which are broken, it just isn't good form, and it won't make me want to visit your blog!

7. Samey Samey
Recently it feels like a lot of blogs are producing the same content with the same type of photos, same props, same everything. Sometimes I find myself lost on who's blog I am on! I can be a victim of this myself, I mean copper and marble everything is just perfection, but sometimes I feel like I get lost in it all, maybe I am alone here?

8. Algorithms
Ever since IG, Facebook & Instagram introduced the reorder of the posts I feel like I work 10x as hard to stand out. Sometimes it is like fighting a loosing battle if you post the same time as Kim K for example you are totally skrewed.

9. Not Interacting Back
This one has upset me recently. I comment on A LOT of blogs, like a lot. I am addicted to my Bloglovin' account. I try really hard to make sure I visit as many blogs as I can across the week (but I am in no way saying I am perfect at this!) and I see a lot of even really big bloggers doing the same, which is lovely! But I really dislike when some just don't give anything back, nothing at all - its frustrating and will eventually stop me visiting a blog when I see this!

10. Sending Me Irrelevant SnapChats
So this one is mainly due to my friends and the odd random. I daily vlog on my Snapchat (MakeErinOver) and I love interacting with people on there, sending them Chats via their stories, and sending snaps to people of things I think they would like, I love getting messages on there, or when people snap me thinking of me via make up etc. LOVE IT. But I hate getting snaps from people of things that belong in their story, something that is of no relevance to me, its irritating, and not good snapchatty behaviour.

Which things annoy you most about Social Media and Blogging? Let me know in the comments below :)

I would LOVE it if you could follow me on Bloglovin' (I follow back too)

  • Yes, I totally agree with every points. Interacting with readers is extremely important, you show your appreciation and love to someone that took the time to read your post and leave you a nice comment. But I hate fake comments or 'great post' comments that indicate that a person did not read the post. I once had someone that made a comment 'that sounds like a great product' on a post I had about a useless mascara that did not work at all and I could not use it! x

  • You had a lot of things to say and I totally get it and I agree with all of them. I am not quite popular as many of you guys (and I'm totally okay with that) so I don't notice a lot of shitty things on my accounts / blog, but what I can totally relate with is follow/unfollow. This happened me so many times on Instagram that it kinda discourage me to post anything on anymore. Right now I'm actually happy on twitter, because thanks chats I found real people who followed me without unfollowing. I think we should be fair and nice to each other, because blogging should be primarily about blogging and community, not gaining followers so you can get money or free products. Amen.

    PS: Great post. :D

  • haha you are so right with everything and I can totally relate. I hate this 'follow/unfollow' dynamic on Instagram, it's the most frustrating thing. And I get you on people's comments. I got this one person, always commenting the same thing and I know she doesn't even pay attention (she even commented twice on a same post before) x

  • YES! Some of these are downright annoying! ESPECIALLY the follow/unfollow tactic! I really despise that one... At the end of the day, I just feel you can tell from some of these things if the person is really in it for the right reasons! i.e they enjoy doing it? Just have to hope that brands and other people eventually see it as well :)

That follow/unfollow thing on IG is soo rude to me. I always wonder if that actually works because it puts such a bad taste in my mouth. If I notice someone do that to me more then a few times I will block them.

    Great post!

  • Everything you mentioned on this post also drives me insane! You had such a great way of putting it into words. I didn't even know they did some of these things, but the way you word it would also frustrate me. I think the following then unfollowing thing is the worst, its so rude, and sketchy to me. Ugh, just thinking about it puts me in the wrong vibe. Well I hope you have a great day xxxx

  • I used to follow a big local beauty blogger. For years, I commented on her posts and read regularly - I even backread her old posts! But sadly I never got a reply. For me it showed that she didn't care about her readership so I just went ahead and unfollowed her.

  • I agree with all these! I especially don't like when you give love to blogs and they just ignore youu, it's like I don't have to comment on your blog or anything. I'm just trying to be friendly! It would be nice if the love was given back. Auto Twitter DMs are my massive pet hate, especially when that person follows you first! Ohh, you're a blogger, I'll follow you back. Auto DM!

This blog post is so relatable. I've only been blogging for just over a month and have learnt about some of these pretty fast! So annoying! Loved this post though

  • One of the main reasons I don't tend to use instagram very much is because of the follow unfollow trick, it's so disheartening! To be fair I've now jumped onto the marble background hype, photos look so much better for some reason! I cannot believe we've both done posts about blogging peeves haha, comments are the worst!

  • All the reasons you mentioned above are so true and valid.
It sucks that some people out there either buy their followers or do the (un)follow game all the time.
So far, I have not experienced so, even though I have my blog for a bit over 3 years now, but it's relatively small, as well.
I am not in the blogging world to grow numbers, you know?
If some people are here just to get big, then honestly, they blog for the wrong reasons, imo.
I like when people react to my posts, in a way that you can actually see that they read it. Just "Great post + social media" comments, I don't even care about.
So yeah, long story short, THANKS for saying out loud what many of us also feel about the blogging world.
Thanks to #BloggingGals I found yours!
    You've got a new follower.

I hate the 'great post' thing! My tactic is visit all the blogs of people who leave real comments and ignore the spammers ;) I get sad when people (like not super-famous bloggers who are obviously flooded with interactions) whose blogs I read and enjoy never seem to visit back - maybe they do but it's nice to leave a comment if you enjoyed a post! Twitter Auto DMs are the worst: just why?!

This was such a awesome and relateable post! I absolutely cannot stand followers/unfollowers. For over three weeks now it has been particularly bad for me. Ever since I hit 4500 On instagram it's like it began raining with those type of accounts. For Nearly a month my followers on Instagram Keep ranging from 4490 - 4510. It keeps bouncing between this range, ultimately not growing and it has fustrated me to know end as it's stunting my Instagrams growth.

  • I absolutely agree with everything you said! Especially 1,2 & 6 are so super annoying! Twitter DM's do the exact opposite what the sender would probably want: I unfollow almost always. I want to read blogs with personality to them and DM's I'm afraid are not very personal. And don't even let me get started with silly comments on blogposts with the only point of them being to leave the links! I can't remember which post exactly it was, but I was writing about something difficult, and somebody commented "so lovely"..... and ofcourse they left the lovely links.
Oh well, luckily the blogging community in general is so amazing and supportive. I'm just so happy I ever decided to start my blog <3

I completely agree with most of these points. The follow-unfollow game or buying followers is absolutely ridiculous!
And I also get really put off by bloggers who not only don't visit my blog (I can't expect everyone I leave a comment on their blog to visit mine) but don't even comment back on their posts. x

  • Ahhh I totally agree with you on these! I hate follow/unfollow because it makes me so disappointed - I get excited that I'm finding a new person then it turns out they're only in it for the numbers. It makes me so suspicious now when someone follows and they're more popular than me. It also makes me sad when people unfollow if you don't follow them back right away :/
Although I suppose it makes you appreciate your loyal followers!

  • Totally feeling you! There is nothing worse than those copy paste commenters who add no value. I want to feel engaged with blogs and followers the same, so I always make sure that my comments as a blogger or follower are relative. Calling me Instagrammer when you can clearly see my name is The White Punjabi Bride means you took no time to look at my photos or blog, you just copied a generic template. Great post, thanks for sharing!

  • Love this post. I absolutely hate auto-dms and the follow- unfollow tricks that people play and think we don't notice them. I recently found out that my fav youtuber had bought followers and i genuinely liked her at first but after finding out it just pisses me off everytime i see her video. I feel like somehow she betrayed me and her followers. Its such a dishonest thing to do really.
